Looking ahead to 2009, the AfricaBike has been given a few modifications. As always, it's still designed with the African terrain and people in mind, but the new overhaul is, well, a bit burlier.
The new 2009 3-speed model (pictured) now has an integrated rear rack to support more weight and a folding basket so it can be included inside the bike box (instead of being shipped separately). Ultimately, this will help reduce shipping costs worldwide.

I am so excited! I wish I didn't have to wait 6 months to get it!

I have visited some of Africa, well off the regular tourist spots and I cannot tell you how fantastic this project is. Infact I just bought my wife one... It rides very light for its weight, Its simply fun. Put a seat on the back, and Im her taxi driver home late from the pub. Excellent! Thank you Kona - The only bike I will ride.
