Before clip-less pedals and forks

It's hard to remember that before clip-less pedals, fat tires and forks, the bicycle was purely meant for transportation.

And that's exactly what the Kona AfricaBike is to our program's recipients - a means of transportation. Daniel Canfield of the Examiner, explains this point while highlighting the Kona AfricaBike program and its useful purpose for medical HIV/AIDS relief workers.

Hoodies help Kona Basic Needs

Orb clothing company, based in British Columbia, launched a 'Ride Your Bike' campaign in support of Bike Month. The campaign encourages people to ride their bikes in style while giving back to Kona Basic Needs. They designed a hoody to represent the campaign and help raise money. The partial proceeds along with a percentage of monthly sales from the flagship store in Vancouver raised $531 for the program.

Wedding Bells Bring AfricaBikes

Another donation just arrived, this time from Megan and Matt Warhurst who at their recent wedding asked family and friends to donate to Kona Basic Needs ... and they raised 544 Swiss francs - which is roughly $504 USD.

Congratulations on your wedding Megan and Matt and thanks for thinking of Kona and the AfricaBike.

The '09 Handover Dates Are In

In the next six months we'll be delivering 640 Kona AfricaBikes to three projects in sub- Saharan Africa. As usual, these bikes will be distributed to healthcare workers  to enable them to be more efficient in their delivery of services and more productive in their personal lives.

 

There will be three opportunities for up to 15 participants to attend each build and handover. As a participant, you will build the bicycles, train mechanics and really “get dirty” for two full days - don't worry, no prior experience necessary. This will be a vacation, but one that gives something back and really makes a difference in the following areas:

• Aug 24-28: Bukoba, in the remote Kagera region of north-western Tanzania. 
• Sept 20-24: Umlazi, a township on the east coast of Durban, the capital of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province.   
• Oct 5-9: Kinondoni, a rural area on the outskirts of Tanzania’s capital, Dar-es-Salaam.
